Mengenal Vyatta




Vyatta adalah sebuah software routing terbuka yang dikembangkan oleh perusahaan Vyatta diciptakan pada tahun 2005.
Vyatta menggunakan mesin routing yang disebut XORP (eXtensible Open Router Platform) diciptakan pada tahun 2002 dan didanai awalnya oleh Intel dan National Science Foundation ,lalu berlanjut dengan Microsoft dan Vyatta.

Ide yang menarik dari OS Vyatta ini adalah berasal dari paket perangkat lunak termasuk XORP dan distribusi Linux Debian turunan. Anda dapat menggunakan Vyatta sebagai LiveCD dan menyimpan konfigurasi pada floppy disk atau menginstalnya pada hard drive anda untuk kinerja yang lebih baik. Untuk mempelajari Vyatta sangatlah mudah karena "routing engine" dan OS sekarang digabung dalam satu paket unik.

Pada bulan Januari 2008, Vyatta memperkenalkan rilis testing yaitu "Glendale Alpha  . Rilis ini tidak lagi menggunakan shell XORP untuk Vyatta CLI tapi shell didesain ulang disebut FusionCLI berdasarkan perintah shell Bash. FusionCLI terlihat seperti shell XORP tetapi seperti shell ini seperti yang di jelaskan oleh Vyatta adalah shell yang lebih kuat dan dapat memudahkan untuk pengembangan fitur kedepannya.

Vyatta dapat digunakan pada komputer manapun dengan arsitektur x86, dengan kata lain komputer dengan prosesor Intel atau prosesor AMD dan tentu saja setidaknya satu network interface ( NIC ). Bahkan tidak hanya itu, lebih baik untuk memiliki floppy disk drive atau hard drive untuk menyimpan konfigurasi systemnya.

CLI ( Command Line Interface) Vyatta routing platform disebut jg XORPSH untuk XORP shell . Interface ini tampak seperti antarmuka Juniper OS tetapi sangat berbeda dengan yang terkenal Cisco IOS CLI .
Sebuah antarmuka web yang tersedia untuk orang-orang yang Anda tidak suka antarmuka baris perintah. Telnet dan ssh ( secure shell ) protokol dapat digunakan untuk mengakses Vyatta juga.

Vyatta Router mendukung protokol jaringan seperti :
- Routing : RIPv2 , OSPF , BGP .
- Encapsulation : Frame relay atau PPP .
- Address translation ( NAT ) .
- Redundancy protocol ( VRRP ) .
- DHCP server or relay.
- Troubleshooting: TCPdump.
- Stateful Firewall .

Protokol standar yang digunakan oleh Vyatta agar dapat berinteraksi dengan produk dari produsen lain seperti Telkomunikasi raksasa Amerika CISCO ,Nortel dan Juniper atau perangkat lain untuk menghormati standar jaringan didefinisikan dalam RFC (Request for Comment ) yang dibuat oleh kelompok internasional IETF ( Internet engineering Task Force ).

Keuntungan dari Vyatta sangat menarik :

Perangkat lunak ini gratis.
Perangkat ini hanya membutuhkan arsitektur x86 sebagai hardware.

Karena konsep open source, keamanan semakin diperbaiki karena OS ini selalu diaudit oleh perusahaan eksternal dan jika terjadi masalah keamanan, setiap orang dapat bekerja untuk mengatasinya. Router Vyatta tetap kurang bagus dibandingkan dengan produk komersial lain, ini disebabkan oleh fakta bahwa Vyatta hampir selalu digunakan sebagai solusi alat berbasis perangkat lunak dan bukan solusi alat berbasis hardware seperti para pesaingnya. Sebuah solusi alat berbasis hardware "parsial" yang tersedia untuk Vyatta adalah dengan PC Dell di mana Vyatta sudah diinstal pada hard drivenya.

Router Vyatta tidak memiliki kekayaan fungsi seperti router Cisco, tetapi keajaiban Vyatta adalah dengan memilikinya tidak perlu mengeluarkan banyak uang sebanyak ratusan juta dolar seperti yang dihabiskan oleh Perusahaan California setiap tahun . Untungnya, hal ini tidak masalah karena hanya beberapa fungsi yang sudah didukung oleh Vyatta benar-benar digunakan untuk menjalankan router. Ada baiknya untuk sebagai penekanan bahwa Anda dapat menginstal paket untuk menambahkan fungsi baru seperti misalnya CDP ( Cisco Discovery Protocol) .

Router Vyatta masih baru dan mempunyai beberapa fungsi penting yang kurang seperti VPN tetapi tim pengembangan yang bekerja pada Vyatta pasti akan memberikan solusi secepat mungkin.

Sejak Vyatta VC 2.2, banyak bug bug yang telah dipecahkan . Vyatta sekarang dapat bersaing dengan Cisco 1xxx dan 2xxx router seri seperti router seri 1800, 2600, atau 2800.

Vyatta dapat digunakan dalam skala yg kecil untuk lingkungan bisnis menengah, tapi sebelum menerapkan Vyatta dalam jaringan produksi Anda, kami sangat menyarankan Anda untuk mengujinya dalam lab atau jaringan kecil sementara untuk melihat apakah router ini cocok dengan apa yang Anda butuhkan.  Demikian penjelasan tentang Vyatta, semoga dapat bermanfaat bagi teman2 semua.
